Post-Colonial Parallels |
“The connection between the West Indies, Europe and America is quite extensive. It is not a harmonious relationship but the ties are there nevertheless. Gradually I began to look at Creole culture in the context of colonialism. The main strategy I used was to appropriate famous images, or famous places, things that belong to the great tradition of European art, and placed them in a Haitian context--or the reverse, taking Haitian imagery and working it into a Western context. Sometimes the juxtaposition is confrontational. Sometimes I detect a kind of blending... We cannot ignore that colonialism is a powerful engine of culture making.”
